field training officer
The Field Training Officer (FTO) position is an appointed position given to experienced deputies who have demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the law and Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) policy. FTO’s received over 40 hours of initial training which consists of determining how newly hired deputies learn best and how to properly document their daily activity through a Daily Observation Report. The Sheriff’s Office administration then uses this report to evaluate the new deputy on their work performance. FTO’s are tasked with instructing newly hired deputies in serving Buffalo County, following their graduation from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center (NLETC). The topics that an FTO is responsible for teaching are geography and orientation of over 970 square miles of Buffalo County and teaching uniformed patrol procedure that conforms with BCSO policy and the Law.
drug recognition expert
Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office employs deputies with enhanced training and expertise in the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program. The DRE program is used across the world as a standardized program which is oversaw by the International Association of Police Chiefs (IACP). Deputies certified as DREs are trained to perform evaluations on subjects under the influence of drugs. These evaluations are used to enhance and develop further evidence in cases where this evidence would be needed to aid in prosecution. Obtaining and maintaining this certification involves ongoing training and is considered a significant accomplishment within law enforcement professionals.
